National holidays

These public holidays apply throughout Switzerland with minor exceptions:

  • January 1 (Monday): New Year
  • March 29 (Friday): Good Friday (except in Ticino and Valais)
  • April 1 (Monday): Easter Monday (mostly unofficial)
  • May 9 (Thursday): Ascension
  • May 20 (Monday): Whit Monday (except in Fribourg, Valais and Zug)
  • August 1 (Thursday): National holiday
  • September 15 (Sunday): Federal Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer (except in Geneva)
  • December 25 (Wednesday): Christmas
